-if I were… o if I was…?-

-if I were… o if I was…?-
Nota d'uso
L'espressione if I were you è comune per introdurre un consiglio: If I were you, I wouldn't marry him, se fossi in te, non lo sposerei. Sempre di più nell'inglese corrente si usa l'espressione if I was al posto della forma if I were, tradizionalmente considerata più corretta. In frasi che iniziano con if, were spesso corrisponde al congiuntivo imperfetto italiano: If I were 30 years younger, I would emigrate, se fossi 30 anni più giovane, emigrerei; If I were a king, I'd give everyone 1 million pounds, se fossi un re, darei un milione di sterline a testa. If I was si usa, invece, per introdurre qualcosa di reale o possibile, e quindi si traduce in italiano con il modo indicativo: If I was wrong, then I apologize, se mi sono sbagliato, allora mi scuso. ► anche subjunctive.
